The Old Norwichtown Burying Ground

The Old Burying Ground, nestled in the historic heart of Norwich, Connecticut, has a storied history dating back to its establishment on January 4th, 1700. This sacred burial ground was initiated using the personal land generously contributed by Samuel Huntington, who played a pivotal role in shaping the early destiny of this enchanting town.

As time marched on and the Norwich community flourished, the need for more burial space became evident. To accommodate the growing number of dearly departed residents, additional parcels of land were thoughtfully incorporated into this hallowed resting place, expanding its boundaries and preserving a tangible testament to the town's rich history.

Amidst the countless epitaphs and weathered headstones, one notable figure emerges from the annals of time - Hannah Arnold. A native of Norwich, she graced this world in the early 1700s and held a special place in the town's heart, being the mother of none other than Benedict Arnold, whose name is forever etched in American history for his complex role in the American Revolutionary War.

Samuel Huntington is also buried here, a founding father whose contributions to the nation are indelible. Samuel Huntington proudly affixed his signature to both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, a distinction that elevates his resting place to a realm of historical significance.

For me, the Old Burying Ground is more than just a historical site; it's a part of my personal journey. I was fortunate to grow up in this area and went on numerous field trips to this hallowed ground during my formative years. Yet, it wasn't until I reached adulthood that I truly grasped the profound beauty and historical resonance that this cemetery exudes.

The silent stories, the enduring echoes of the past, and the tranquil serenity of the surroundings all combined to weave a tapestry of appreciation that has enriched my connection to this timeless place.
