The History of Saint Mary's Church in Queens

Writer's picture: Abby BrenkerAbby Brenker

This is Saint Mary’s Church in Long Island City in Queens. In 1868 the first mass had about 50 attendees and was held in a public schoolhouse before this church was built. There were several different buildings and expansions of Saint Mary’s which were lost in a fire. Construction on this beautiful church started in 1893 and was fully completed the following year. In 1902 a sister school opened.

The church is still open and has an active congregation. Saint Mary’s is a beautiful building and a neighborhood staple in Long Island City.
