This month we are exploring theories behind aliens and UFO sightings on Lunatics Radio Hour. Here are some of the best horror movies about Aliens and UFOs.
Listen to episode 149 of the Lunatics Radio Hour podcast for more.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988): A good watch for when you want cheesy horror. This cult classic is a truly ridiculous movie that I can’t help but love. Though there isn’t much of a plot to this film the imagery and practical effects are fun and surprisingly disturbing. The Klowns invasion is terrifying, but at least you get a show before you die.
The Thing (1982): A perfect 80s horror film, and a great entry into John Carpenter’s filmography if you aren't already familiar. My personal favorite alien movie and proof that sometimes remakes are superior. Again I have to gush over the use of practical effects. Dread and suspense is built up through the use of gore and the character’s reactions in a way that is brilliant. I cannot recommend this movie enough.
Alien (1979): A quintessential space horror movie, genre defining. A slasher film where the killer is an unstoppable, bloodthirsty alien. The Xenomorph’s physiology is terrifying, that mixed with its high intelligence makes one of the scariest movie monsters of all time. This movie never gets tiring or less suspenseful no matter how many times you watch it.
Fire in the Sky (1993): One of the most disturbing abduction scenes I’ve ever seen, not for the faint of heart. That being said, this movie is an interesting watch. Loosely based on a true story, the movie follows how those left on earth have to deal with the repercussions of someone you know being abducted by aliens. Will anyone believe you?
Annihilation (2018): A beautiful film that explores the mix of aliens and humans. This movie switches back and forth from horrible gore and terrifying creatures to beautiful scenery and poetic moments. Though the alien in this one is more environmental rather than creatures, it does a great job exploring the paralyzing fear, curiosity, and amazement that would come with an alien encounter.
They Live (1988): Another cult classic to watch if you’re in the mood for something campy and fun. Starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, They Live explores a world where the alien invasion went unnoticed, until now. This movie is full of quotable moments and fun action scenes. It also begs the question, how many subliminal messages are you missing?
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978): Another example of me enjoying a remake more than the original is this 70s classic. In addition to the absolutely stunning Jeff Goldblum starring in it, this film has one of the most entertaining and unnerving alien invasions to watch. The acting is incredible and the last scene sticks with me to this day.
Nope (2022): A new take on the classic UFO shape in the sky. Jordan Peele brings his love of classic horror to this alien feature, building tension by focusing on the human side of the encounter. A movie that I think does a great job showing how different types of people would really act when faced with an alien creature and the consequences of those actions.
