In honor of our demonic summoning series on Lunatics Radio Hour, let's talk about some of the best demonic horror films.
The Witch (2015) Written and directed by Robert Eggers, The Witch is a fan favorite. Starring horror dream girl Anya Taylor-Joy, the film tells the story of a family in 1630s New England who is being terrorized by demons and witches.
The Exorcist (1973) Of course, The Exorcist belongs on the list of the best demonic horror movies. Directed by William Friedkin and starring Linda Blair as Regan, The Exorcist is about a young girl who becomes possessed by a demonic entity, and the priest who exorcizes her. By the way, did you know The Exorcist was based on true events?
Hereditary (2018) As discussed in episode 133 of the Lunatics Radio Hour podcast, Hereditary’s demon is inspired by the historic Ars Goetia, part of the Lesser Key of Solomon. Ari Astor’s breakout movie mixes familial grief and trauma with terror and horror. It remains one of the scariest films I’ve ever seen.
The Conjuring (2013) Based on the real life investigation of The Warrens, The Conjuring is a terrifying look at a demonic possession haunting a family. The Conjuring kicked-off one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all time. The house from the true events still exists to this day.
Insidious (2010) Created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, Insidious has a little bit of everything. Both The Conjuring and Insidious star Patrick Wilson. Insidious also boasts Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins. It’s not for the faint of heart.
The Evil Dead (1981) From Sam Rami, The Evil Dead follows five friends who accidentally unleash demonic entities from their cabin in the woods. A cult classic that is beloved by many horror fans.
The Dark and The Wicked (2020) The Dark and The Wicked is simple in some ways but incredibly effective and terrifying. It was written and directed by Bryan Bertino, and stars Marin Ireland. Similar to some of the other films on this list, the film tells the story of a family that is slowly consumed by an evil and demonic entity. The setting is excellent for horror.
