The Best Comedy Horror Films

There is a distinction between comedic horror movies and horror parodies. There is a very special place in my heart for films like Scream (1996). Personally, I am less excited by films like Scary Movie (but I totally understand their place in the world!)

Here are a few of my favorite funny horror movies. Films I find both legitimately scary and hilarious.

Scream (1996) The ultimate. A classic. With a star-studded 90s cast, Scream is the standard that comedic horror films have been trying to achieve ever since it hit theaters. It was directed by Wes Craven, written by Kevin Williamson. From its iconic opening sequence, to its meta-humor, Scream gives us everything we want and more. Through the lens of a slasher film, Scream brings audiences into the minds of high school students dealing with a terrifying and unknown enemy. All while binge drinking.

Get Out (2017) Get Out is hands down a terrifying psychological thriller, written and directed by Jordan Peele. But it’s also laugh out loud funny at times. Its commentary and satire is handled in a way only Jordan Peele can. Starring Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams, Get Out is a modern masterpiece.

Ready or Not (2019) Starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell, Ready or Not is an incredibly fun film. It plays with classic horror tropes but with a refreshing twist. And it’s a film that goes there. I had to cringe away several times.

Mom and Dad (2017) Listen, Nicholas Cage deserves a spot on this list, perhaps on any list for that matter. Mom and Dad is a horror comedy written and directed by Brian Taylor. It also stars the incredible Selma Blair. The premise alone is intense, what if parents turn against their children?

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) I’m such a fan of this film. In some ways its premise is similar to Ready or Not. A group of people are locked in a big house (for reasons) and must survive the night. Bodies Bodies Bodies is a classic mystery horror film a la Agatha Christie. But picture an Agatha Christie novel that stars Pete Davidson.

The Menu (2022) 2022 was a big year for horror comedy. And with good reason, I think comedy (especially when it’s well done) is such a welcome breath of fresh air in a truly terrifying film. The Menu stars Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy. It brings audiences into the world of the must elite tasting menu on the market. A once in a lifetime experience.

The Cabin In The Woods (2011) Of course no horror comedy list would be complete without the iconic Cabin In The Woods, starring Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Connolly. It was written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, directed by Goddard. The Cabin in The Woods has been an audience favorite since it hit theaters in 2011.
