This is the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2018 the city removed itself as a trustee to the burial ground. Then Mayor Andy Berke said that the city needed to focus on the future and not the past. He condemned White Supremacy and while he expressed honor for the dead, he would not honor what they stood for.
In March of 2016, maintenance workers discovered the grave of a Black soldier, a former enslaved man, who died fighting, while in servitude, for the South. Shaderick Searcy was born in 1845 and died in the mid 1900s. Finding his grave was a win for historians who had been trying to locate Searcy’s burial site for years.
The history of the Civil War is still a prominent part of Chattanooga. This Cemetery is located alongside the campus of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, students and faculty continue to push back against confederate flags and monuments.
